A dwelling is known to have existed on the site from as early as 1693. In 1812 a Dunblane-born architect James Gillespie Graham (1776-1855) extensively remodelled the existing farmhouse creating Ross Priory described as a Scottish Gothic style country
house.
The Buchanan Clan had held the land from the 11th century and in 1745 the Leith-Buchanans were cursed by the Marquess of Tullibardine, a Jacobite fugitive, when they betrayed him to government troops. " There will be Murray's on the Braes of Atholl when there's ne'er a Buchanan at the Ross".

The Marquess's curse came to pass when, in 1925, the Leith-Buchanan's male line finally died out and the house was leased to Major George J.H.Christie, a veteran of World War 1, remaining in the family's possession until shortly after the Major's death. Major Christie was responsible the development and cultivation of the Priory's surrounding Gardens including the Moongate and wall in the Lady Curran Garden.
In 1971, Ross Priory and it's 200 acres which includes the formal gardens, parkland a burial ground and a golf course were sold to Strathclyde University, despite objections from the local population.
Ross Priory is now commonly used for meetings and entertainment by staff and graduates of Strathclyde university, as well as being a popular wedding venue.
